Escape 2017 and travel back to the late 1950’s, in Memphis, Tennessee! Set during the early days of rock and roll and the underground dance clubs, Memphis is an exhilarating tale of love and fame, filled with high-energy music and explosive dancing. Inspired by actual events, Memphis is about a Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ, who wants to change the world by playing “race music” on a popular white radio station, and Felicia, a black club singer, who is ready for her big break in world that is totally closed up to African American’s in a “white-washed” world. Come along on their incredible journey to the ends of the airwaves - filled with laughter, soaring emotion and roof-raising rock 'n' roll!
The humorous, yet poignant story, is craftily written by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and All Shook Up) and set to an original score by Bon Jovi's David Bryan, that evokes the powerhouse funk of James Brown, the hot guitar riffs of Chuck Berry, the smooth harmonies of the Temptations, and the silken, bouncy pop of the era’s great girl groups.

Performing in the Courtyard Behind 6th & Penn

FOUR QUESTIONS WITH: Apollo Loose as Mr. Collins and Mr. Simmons

What interests you about playing your character?
As a protagonist in varying degrees, it is hard to be the bad guy all the time. In the first scene, as Mr. Collins (store owner) – I drop the n-word twice, which is something that’s no longer acceptable to say. But in my grandparents’ generation, that was just the world they lived in. Racial dialogue has come so far, yet this show also proves there is still a long way to go. The majority of my time on stage is as Mr. Simmons (radio station owner), and he sees the dollar signs. I think he knows rock-n-roll is more than a fad, and there is money to be made. Lastly, the nameless and violent racists ... these are not traits representative of all white people, but there were enough of them around to play a role in the show.

What has playing your character taught you about yourself?
Mr. Simmons is not a bad guy, but I don’t think he taught me much about myself. His role in the show probably has more to do with opening the doors for Huey and Felecia.

What's your favorite line from the show?
Mr. Simmons gets the new ratings, and his response is priceless. No spoilers, you have to come see it for yourself.

What do you think will surprise people about this show?
Genesius Theatre brings legitimate Broadway productions to Berks County. This show puts so much song, dance, and scenery into such a tiny space. No other venue in the area has that special ability to WOW the audience, time and time again. I love being a part of this wonderful experience whenever I take the stage.
